ACRL Virtual Worlds Interest Group

The ACRL Virtual Worlds Interest Group meets every 3rd SUN at noon SLT/Pacific to share educational topics with a focus on information literacy in virtual spaces. Our main meeting space is Library Land CVL Meeting Space (Selby Park) in Second Life (Second Life URL: Simulcasting and closed captioning are available upon request.

The ACRL VWIG also strives to meet virtually and in-person at the annual and midwinter ALA conferences. We also explore other virtual spaces, such as the virtual world Kitely and upcoming social VR environments like Sansar, AltspaceVR, and High Fidelity.

For in-world event notices, join the free “ACRL in Second Life” group in Second Life. While encouraged, you do not need to be a member of ALA or ACRL to join or attend any of the events.


To provide information and activities for ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries) members and non-members interested in information literacy, librarianship, and education as it relates to virtual worlds; to recruit new ACRL members through virtual worlds; to manage the ACRL presence in virtual worlds; to participate and support the activities of ACRL in virtual worlds on an ongoing basis; to hold meetings within these virtual environments at ALA and ACRL conferences  in order to share information and provide professional networking opportunities.


VWIG must have at least three officers at any time (Incoming Convener, Convener, Outgoing Convener). These officers must be members of ACRL. VWIG members may volunteer to serve as Incoming Convener (or Incoming Co-Convener) for a year, and then Convener (or Co-Convener) for another year. New Conveners (or Co-Conveners) take office following ALA Annual Conference each year (~July 1st).

ACRL VWIG typically meets on the 3rd Sunday of each month, 12 noon – 1 pm Second Life Time/Pacific (usually the 3rd Sunday of each month). Check the CVL Events Calendar for specific dates and times.

Meetings and programs may be held jointly or sequentially on the same day with other groups and events, such as the Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable, Octagon Creative Exploration, Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education conference, Virtual Center for Archives & Records Administration, the Dickens Project, and Sheila Webber’s Information Literacy Research group.
